چکیده

We report evidence for Milankovitch cycles discovered in Middle Permian strata of the fluvial Abrahamskraal formation, lower Beaufort Group, Karoo Basin Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Statistical analyses ranked lithologies and major element oxides have been used to obtain clusters elements that capture lithological variations reflect changes sedimentary environment through time. Spectral analysis these elemental statistical groups reveal significant meter-scale 67 m, 17.5 5.9 m 3.5–2.8 which can be interpreted as expression astronomical forcing, based on available estimate sedimentation rate. The identified periods short-eccentricity, precession obliquity show a good match with those predicted times, providing data-based validation theory. Cycle counting integrated U Pb dating, provides cyclochronological calibration Wordian normal magnetozones and, combined radiometric ages, indicates an age 266.5 ± 0.26 Ma end Kiaman superchron. Recognition orbitally driven Gondwana supercontinent suggest global extension influence climate confirms empirical knowledge Earth's parameters before 260 million years ago. new data demonstrate rare case astronomically paced cyclicity deposits unique cyclostratigraphic record whose reflects orbitally-paced precipitation changes. • First interior supercontinent. Fluvial controlled by Validate Ma. Combined Cyclostratigraphic length GU1n/r (Wordian) magnetochrons.

Sulfur geochemistry across a terrestrial Permian^Triassic boundary section in the Karoo Basin, South Africa

Concentrations of sulfur and carbon, and isotopic compositions of sulfur were determined in sedimentary rocks from a section across the terrestrial Permian^Triassic (P^Tr) boundary in the northern Karoo Basin, South Africa. High concentrations of sulfide produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria were found in the sedimentary rocks at and just below the perceived P^Tr boundary. The ratios of organic...

Modeling the Role of Primary Productivity Disruption in End- Permian Extinctions, Karoo Basin, South Africa

The end-Permian mass extinction is well-known as the most severe mass extinction of the Phanerozoic. Terrestrial communities appear to have been strongly affected by the event, but the cause of the extinction remains enigmatic. Here we explore whether primary producer disruption (e.g., extinction of terrestrial plants) could have led to a collapse of end-Permian terrestrial ecosystems, using mo...

Abrupt and gradual extinction among Late Permian land vertebrates in the Karoo basin, South Africa.

The Karoo basin of South Africa exposes a succession of Upper Permian to Lower Triassic terrestrial strata containing abundant terrestrial vertebrate fossils. Paleomagnetic/magnetostratigraphic and carbon-isotope data allow sections to be correlated across the basin. With this stratigraphy, the vertebrate fossil data show a gradual extinction in the Upper Permian punctuated by an enhanced extin...

Pre-drill Groundwater Geochemistry in the Karoo Basin, South Africa.

Enhanced production of unconventional hydrocarbons in the United States has driven interest in natural gas development globally, but simultaneously raised concerns regarding water quantity and quality impacts associated with hydrocarbon extraction. We conducted a pre-development assessment of groundwater geochemistry in the critically water-restricted Karoo Basin, South Africa. Twenty-two sprin...

Nycteroleter affinities of a Permian parareptile from the South African Karoo Basin

The Middle Permian Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone in South Africa has produced a rich record of tetrapods domi− nated by dinocephalian therapsids and pareiasaurid para− reptiles. In this study we reassess the affinities of a specimen from this horizon previously identified as a procolophonoid and provide evidence that it is instead referable to a nyctero− leter parareptile, an identification th...
